Crash Bandicoot is a game franchise created and originally developed by Naughty Dog, with the first three main installments and two spin-offs being published as PlayStation exclusives by Sony Computer Entertainment, while rights to the franchise were owned by Universal Interactive. The series went multiplatform in the early 2000s and is now owned by Activision.
The series was created as part of a three-game contract between Naughty and Universal; the studio began conceptualizing the first game in 1994, taking inspiration from popular and acclaimed platformer games at the time. The Crash Bandicoot series was the first intellectual property developed in a partnership between Naughty Dog and Sony, which culminated in Sony's acquisition of the studio in 2001.
Naughty Dog's tenure on the Crash Bandicoot series received critical acclaim, particularly for its animation and graphical qualities; Crash became one of the most recognizable mascots for the original PlayStation, and the series sold over 25.5 million copies on the console. Crash Bandicoot is additionally credited for establishing Naughty Dog's reputation within the gaming industry.
