Gran Turismo is a 1997 racing video game developed by Polys Entertainment and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation. It is the first installment of the Gran Turismo series.

Gran Turismo is a racing simulation game in which players race against artificial intelligence drivers on various race tracks. The game includes an arcade mode in which they can freely choose tracks and vehicles, and a simulation mode in which players go through events and championship to unlock currency and cars. It features 140 cars and 11 race tracks.

Development on Gran Turismo was spearheaded by Kazunori Yamauchi of Polys Entertainment, then an internal development team in Sony. Yamauchi began working on the game in 1992, prior to Polys' formation in 1994, and the production lasted for five years. The production team during the game's development cycle was not set, with Yamauchi sometimes working with only seven to fifteen additional developers. Yamauchi estimated that Gran Turismo utilized around 75% of the PlayStation's maximum performance. Additional development was provided by Cyberhead.

Gran Turismo was released to critical acclaim, and is considered to be one of the greatest video games ever made. Critics lauded the graphics, scale, attention to detail and realism of the gameplay, with minor criticism regarding the game's difficulty curve. It was a massive commercial success, selling over 10 million copies. The game's critical and commercial performance helped establishing Polys Entertainment as its own studio, renamed Polyphony Digital. Gran Turismo was followed by numerous sequels and spin-offs, starting with Gran Turismo 2, released in 1999. A feature film was released in 2023.
