James Ryan is an English businessman and video game executive. Between 2019 to 2024, he served as the CEO and chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment ("SIE"), a subsidiary of Sony. A long-time employee of Sony's gaming division, Ryan joined the company in 1994, and served as the President of SIE's European branch between 2011 and 2019. He retired from the company in March 2024, following the end of his tenure as SIE's head.

On January 16, 2018, Sony announced that Ryan would take over Kazuo Miura's role as Deputy President of SIE. Under his new position, Ryan worked under SIE chief executive officer John Kodera.[1]
2019-2024: SIE President and CEO[]
On February 12, 2019, it was announced that Ryan will be promoted to president and chief executive officer of SIE. He entered the position on April 1, 2019. Kodera took over Ryan's previous position.[2]
On September 28, 2023, Ryan announced that he would step down as president and CEO of SIE by March 2024. Sony Group's chief operating officer Hiroki Totoki will serve as an interim CEO.[3]
Ryan was named by Variety as one of the 500 most influential entertainment leaders for 2023.[4]
Personal life[]
In his early years, Ryan lived in Newcastle. As of 2023, Ryan lives with his daughters in Highgate, on the northern end of London. In an interview with Luxe Magazine, Ryan expressed his view of Newcastle as his home, reminiscing his time watching the River Tyne from the train. In contrast, Ryan said he is happy in London but he won’t miss it if leaves it. In his free time, Ryan says he enjoys wine, televised sports and crime novels. He admires English football manager and former player Eddie Howe.[5]
