Killzone: Mercenary is a 2013 first-person shooter video game developed by Guerrilla Cambridge and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation Vita. It is a spin-off of the Killzone series, and its fifth overall installment.
As with previous installments, Killzone: Mercenary is set in the 24th century, and chronicles the war between two factions of human races, the Vektans and the Helghast. Mercenary takes place across key events within the main trilogy and follows Arran Danner, the eponymous mercenary whose various contracts force him to get involved with the Vektan-Helghast conflict. Killzone: Mercenary retains much of the gameplay and design of previous Killzone titles, while utilizing several PS Vita features such as the touchscreen. The game had a multiplayer mode, which was shut down in August 2022.
Killzone: Mercenary was the first and only Killzone title not to be developed by series creator Guerrilla Games; instead, production was handled by sister studio Guerrilla Cambridge (formerly Cambridge Studio), while Guerrilla Amsterdam provided creative input throughout development. The game utilized a modified game engine based on 2011's Killzone 3, and development lasted for around two years. The concept came from a desire to explore the franchise's long-standing conflict from a different perspective to allow a more morally ambiguous story.[1] Sony first teased the title in January 2011[2], and the full title was unveiled in August 2012.[3]
Upon release, Killzone: Mercenary received generally favorable reviews, with particular praise for its quality as a first-person shooter game on a portable game system. Additional praise was directed at the visuals, gunplay and multiplayer mode, while criticism was directed at the single-player story, mission design and campaign length. It was followed by Killzone Shadow Fall, developed by Guerrilla Amsterdam and released two months after Mercenary.
