Killzone 3 is a 2011 first-person shooter video game developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3 home console. It is the third main installment and forth overall in the Killzone, and a sequel to 2009's Killzone 2.
As with its predecessors, Killzone 3 is set in the 24th century, and chronicles the war between two factions of human races, the Vektans and the Helghast. Taking place after the events of Killzone 2, the story follows protagonist Tomas "Sev" Sevchenko as he and his men are stranded on the hostile planet of Helghan after assassinating the Helghast Emperor. A first-person shooter, Killzone 3 builds upon mechanics and features introduced in the previous two titles. The game's campaign is set through varied locations on Helghast, ranging from arctic landscapes to abandoned wastelands. New features include the usage of jetpacks, a sliding mechanic and a revamped melee system. The game includes an online multiplayer mode divided into three parts, "Guerrilla Warfare", "Warzone" and "Operations".
Development on Killzone 3 began shortly after the release of Killzone 2 in 2009, and the game was officially announced in March 2010. A major focus of Guerrilla during the game's development was to create a more lighthearted and involving story than in Killzone 2. Killzone 3 also includes support with PlayStation Move and stereoscopic 3D similar to other early 2010s Sony titles . Guerrilla Cambridge provided development support.
Killzone 3 was released to generally positive reviews, and it was praised for art direction, visuals, atmosphere, gameplay and multiplayer modes, though the single-player's campaign was criticized for its writing and characterization, while some gameplay alterations were met with mixed responses. A sequel, Killzone Shadow Fall, was released in 2013.
