Lego Horizon Adventures (stylized as LEGO Horizon Adventures) is an upcoming 2024 action-adventure video game developed by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5, personal computers and Nintendo Switch. A spin-off of the Horizon franchise, it is a collaboration with the Lego toyline.

Presented as a retelling of 2017's Horizon Zero Dawn, Lego Horizon Adventures is a more lighthearted and comedic take on the Horizon series, featuring a more playful version of protagonist Aloy and her supporting cast as she uncovers her backstory and confronts the villainous Helis. The game features both single-player as well options for couch or online cooperative gameplay in which another player takes up the role of Aloy's companion Varl. The game also features the ability to redesign and decorate Aloy's home village, Mother’s Heart.

Rumors about a Lego-themed Horizon title began to surface in 2024; the game was officially announced in June 2024.

Gameplay[]

Lego Horizon Adventurers is an action-adventure video game played from a fixed, third-person perspective. The game can be played as a single-player title with players controlling protagonist Aloy, or play as a two-player cooperative game with another player taking control of Varl, one of Aloy's companions. Cooperative gameplay can be played through both split-screen or online options.

Synopsis[]

Based on the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, Lego Horizon Adventurers follows Aloy as she confronts the cult leader Helis.

Development[]

Lego Horizon Adventures is developed by Dutch-based game studio Guerrilla Games in collaboration with British support studio Studio Gobo and published by Guerrilla's parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 home console, as well as the Nintendo Switch hybrid console and Microsoft Windows-based personal computers. Gobo's involvement in the project was first announced by the studio in January 2023, in which it described itself as a "partner on the Horizon universe".[2] Sony and The Lego Group previously collaborated on a Lego set based on Horizon Forbidden West in May 2022.[3]

Concept and story[]

James Windeler, narrative director of Guerrilla Games, noticed that there was "definitely a passion" to further collaborate on a Lego-inspired Horizon project following both companies working together on a 2022 Lego set. Guerrilla positioned the adaption of Horizon Zero Dawn's story as a major focus and challenge for the team; as a result, the reworked story dialed back on heavier themes as such as existentialism and post-apocalypse, while placing more emphasis on the game's environmental messages as well as increased humor.[4]

Technology[]

Unlike mainline Horizon titles which use Guerrilla's in-house Decima, Lego Horizon Adventures is built using Epic Games's Unreal Engine 5. According to Guerrilla, "every single asset" within the game was designed through actual Lego blocks, which were assembled by a team of Master Builders to recreate faithful renditions of the series' Machines.[5]

Release[]

Rumors about a Lego-themed Horizon title began to circulate throughout May and June of 2024, including the game's potential title.[6] Lego Horizon Adventures was announced on June 7, 2024, as part of Summer Game Fest, with a tentative holiday 2024 release window.[7]

Sony publishes the PlayStation 5, Microsoft Windows and the digital distribution of the Nintendo Switch version, while Solutions 2 Go handles the physical distribution of the Switch version.[8]

Reception[]

Pre-release[]

Writing over a June 2024 demo, IGN's Rebekah Valentine noticed that despite its silly tone Lego Horizon was given the "same level of craft and care with which [Guerrilla] treated the other Horizon games". She praised the visuals, Ashly Burch's more lighthearted performance than in previous games, self-aware humor and based-building mechanics. Having also previewed fellow 2024 release Astro Bot, Valentine favorably compared both games to Nintendo.[9] GamesRadar's Ali Jones enjoyed the game's "undeniable child-like charm" approach for its story and humor, and highlighted the "toybox style" of the gameplay.[10] GameSpot's Mark Delaney thought Lego Horizon Adventures was the "most cinematic Lego game to date", and positively noted its differences from previous Lego games for putting emphasis on its narrative and visuals.[11]
