Lost Soul Aside is an upcoming action role-playing hack-and-slash video game developed by Ultizero Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 and personal computers.
Lost Soul Aside follows the story of Kazer, a young swordsman who finds himself fused with a symbiotic supernatural race called Arena. The game is set in a fantasy world ravaged by war. Lost Soul Aside is set in an open world environment[1], which can be explored on foot or through magic. Combat incorporates Kazer's swordsmanship and magic abilities that can be chained for combos.
Independent developer Yang Bin began working on Lost Soul Aside in 2014 after being inspired by footage of Final Fantasy XV. A prototype of the title, shared in 2016, received attention from several publications as well as Sony, which enlisted Lost Soul Aside within its China Hero Project. Sony helped Bin established Ultizero Games as a fully-fledged development team for the project, with investment from Tencent in 2021. By November 2022, Sony took over publishing duties for Lost Soul Aside. It is set for release on May 30th, 2025 on PS5 and PC.

Synopsis[]
Development[]
Lost Soul Aside is developed by Chinese game studio Ultizero Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5 and personal computers. The project is directed by Yang Bing, who originally launched development as a one-person work in 2016. By May 2019, Bing's team - branded Ultizero Games, had 14 people; by November 2022, Bing's team was comprised of 40 people.
The earliest work on Lost Soul Aside began in 2014, and the game's first footage took two years to make. In May 2019, Sony Interactive Entertainment's Shanghai office described development on the title as "stable and healthy".[2]
Concept[]
Yang Bing, a Chinese game developer, was inspired by a trailer for Square Enix's open world action role-playing title Final Fantasy XV that he watched in 2014.[3]
Technology[]
Lost Soul Aside is developed using Epic Games's Unreal Engine 4. The game's original gameplay footage, released in August 2016, was made using "many" assets from the Unreal Asset marketplace, though at the time Bing expressed desire to make it "100% original" with the help of more people. In a May 2022 interview, Bing cited Bluepoint Games's Demon's Souls as a potential inspiration in terms of visuals and special effects, and mentioned experiencing development on the PlayStation 5.[4]
Music[]
The soundtrack for Lost Soul Aside is composed by Cody Matthew Johnson.[5]
Marketing and release[]
Lost Soul Aside was first shown in August 2016; at the time it was still a one-man project and was aiming to release for personal computers.[6] In March 2017, Lost Soul Aside was announced as one of ten titles chosen for Sony's Project China Hero, a program intended to help Chinese game developers and bolster titles for the PlayStation brand of consoles, confirming a PlayStation 4 version.[7] A gameplay demo of six minutes was shown at PlayStation Experience, in December 2017.[8][9] Bing chose not to show the title at ChinaJoy 2019, preferring to focus the time on development.[10] In January 2020, it was reported that Ultizero Games was aiming to release Lost Soul Aside later that year, though the studio later clarified it wasn't a release date announcement.[11] 18 minutes of new gameplay footage were released on YouTube in April 2021.[12]
A PlayStation 5 version was announced in April 2021.[13] On November 22, 2022, it was announced that Lost Soul Aside will published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, alongside fellow Project China Hero title Convallaria.[14] A demonstration containing 22 minutes of footage was shown in July 2023 as part of ChinaJoy 2023.[15] The same event, Ultizero partnered with Nvidia to use Lost Soul Aside as a demonstration for the GeForce RTX 4K and NVIDIA DLSS 3.[16]
