PlayStation VR is a virtual reality headset developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4 game console. It was released worldwide in October 2016, almost three years into the PlayStation 4's lifespan, and is also forward compatible with its successor, the PlayStation 5.
Its features include a 5.7 inch OLED panel that has a display resolution of 1080p; a processor box for Social Screen video output and 3D audio effect; and compatibility with the DualShock 4 and PlayStation Move, as well as the PlayStation VR Aim.
The headset was known as Project Morpheus during development, and was first in 2014 at the Game Developers Conference. Reception to PlayStation VR was largely favorable for its affordable price for a virtual reality headset, though its also faced criticism for performance issues and lesser quality in comparison to computer-based VR headsets, as well as dwindling library in later years.
A successor, PlayStation VR2, was officially announced in 2022 for a 2023 release.
