Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando is a 2002 platform video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2. The game was re-released for the PlayStation 3 as part of the Ratchet & Clank Collection in 2013, developed by Idol Minds. It was released on the PlayStation Vita in 2014, remastered by Mass Media Inc.. It is the second main installment in the Ratchet & Clank series and the sequel to 2002's Ratchet & Clank.
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando takes place in the "Bogon" galaxy inhabited by various humanoid, anthropomorphic and beastly alien species; it is the only game within the original PS2 saga to not be primarily set in the "Solana" Galaxy. In Going Commando, Ratchet and Clank seek to stop the shadowy MegaCorp after coming across a dangerous "pet project" in development by the organization. The game is presented from a third-person perspective, in which players primarily control Ratchet as he and Clank travel across planets. Ratchet has access to a large array of futuristic and exotic weapons and gadget he can use to combat enemies or complete puzzles with. Several mini-games such as racing exist outside the main story; players can also upgrade their weapons, a new addition to the gameplay. The player can also control Clank in several sections.
Insomniac was approved to begin development on a sequel to Ratchet & Clank five months before the game's release due to positive reactions from play-testers and strong pre-release anticipation. Development lasted ten months, during which Insomniac sought to create a larger game than the previous installment. Due to criticism regarding Ratchet's personality, Going Commando was aimed to soften his characteristics and make him friendlier.
Highly anticipated, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando was released to critical acclaim, with most critics agreeing it was an improvement over its predecessor. It was generally praised for its visuals, improved characterization, story, design and gameplay, though some criticism was pointed at the game's high difficulty and some of its side-activities. It has been since considered one of the best games to release on the PlayStation 2 and one of the best games of 2003. A sequel, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal, was released in 2004.
