Resistance is a series of primarily first-person shooter video games created by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for a variety of PlayStation platforms, most notably the PlayStation 3. Additional installments in the series were developed by Bend Studio and Nihilistic Software.

The premise of the Resistance series, featuring an altered history in which World War II never happened, involves the invasion of the Chimera, a parasitic alien species hellbent on conquering earth and terraforming the planet into a frozen landscape. The series began with 2006's Resistance: Fall of Man and received two direct sequels in 2008's Resistance 2 and 2011's Resistance 3. In addition to the Resistance trilogy, it saw two additional games released for Sony's portable systems, as well as novels and comic book adaptations.

Reception to the Resistance series has been positive, and during the time of the trilogy's release, was viewed alongside Guerrilla Games' Killzone series as the definitive first-person shooters for the PlayStation 3; praise was mostly directed towards the games' visuals, unique weaponry, set-pieces and multiplayer, though the games were also criticized for formulaic design notions. Commercial success has ranged across the titles, from the strong sales of Resistance: Fall of Man to the underperformance of Resistance 3.

Other media[]

Outside of the games, Resistance expanded in other forms of media as well. The franchise saw two novelizations between the release and conclusion of the trilogy: Resistance: The Gathering Storm (2009) serves as an interquel between the events of Fall of Man and Resistance 2, while Resistance: A Hole in the Sky (2011) acts as a prologue to the events of Resistance 3. Both novels were written by William C. Dietz.

A limited comic book series, simply titled Resistance, was published between October 2008 and May 2009, containing a prologue and six issues. It was largely written by Mike Costa and illustrated by Ramón Pérez, while the prologue issue (titled Resistance #0) was co-written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, and illustrated by C.P. Smith. A separate comic issue, "Metastasis", was released as part of a viral marketing for Resistance 2.
