PlayStation Studios Wiki

SCE Studio Liverpool was an English game developer located in Liverpool. It was best known under its original label Psygnosis (doing businesses as Pysghnosis Limited), and acted as both a developer and publisher for multiple games and platforms until its acquisition by Sony Computer Entertainment.

The studio was founded in 1984, and was acquired by Sony in 1993, gradually shifting from making games and publishing for Nintendo platforms and personal computers to exclusively developing for PlayStation consoles and letting Sony publish their projects. In 1999, Psygnosis was renamed Studio Liverpool. In 2005, it became part of Sony's Worldwide Studios organization.

As a game publisher, Studio Liverpool was best known for its Lemmings series, and continued to release games on non-PlayStation consoles until 1998. As a game developer, it was best known for its work on WipeOut and Colony Wars, and was also licensed the Formula One property from 2001 until 2006. The company also notably introduced software tools developer SN Systems to Sony, which acquired SN Systems in 2005.

Studio Liverpool went through a reconstruction in 2010, which saw the halt of several projects worked in the studio. In August 2012, Sony announced the closure of Studio Liverpool; at the time of its closure, the studio was around 100 people strong and worked on at least two projects for the then-upcoming PlayStation 4. Several roles by the studio were succeeded by its XDev team. In 2021, Sony acquired Firesprite, a successor of Psygnosis.
