Super Stardust HD is a 2007 shoot 'em up video game developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was first released for the PlayStation 3, and since then has been re-released for the PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 4. It is part of Housemarque's Stardust game series, and the first installment in a revival of the series published by Sony.
In Super Stardust HD, an enhanced remake of Housemarque's 1994 video game Super Stardust, the player takes control of a spaceship pilot who has to eliminate incoming asteroids and enemy spaceships approaching their spacecraft. In arcade mode, players have to protect five planets from hostile encounters, with each planet level being comprised of five phases; the pilot can upgrade their equipment and weapons throughout the game. Super Stardust HD contains both a single-player and cooperative multiplayer mode.
Super Stardust HD was released to generally positive reviews from gaming publications, who considered the title to be among the best downloadable games at the time of its release. Praise was directed at its visuals, controls and value, though it also attracted criticism at its difficulty and complexity. It enjoyed commercial success with over 400,000 copies sold by 2010. A follow-up, Super Stardust Delta, was released in 2012.
Housemarque and Sony re-released the game several times. Super Stardust Portable was released for the PlayStation Portable in 2008; it received generally mixed reviews for its controls and lack of significant additions over its original version. Super Stardust Ultra was released for the PlayStation 4 in 2015 ; it received generally favorable reviews for its core gameplay and content, but drew some criticism for its aging design. The game also received a companion virtual reality game, Super Stardust VR, for the PlayStation VR; it received mixed reviews with criticism towards its visuals and the integration of the VR headset.
