Syphon Filter is a series of third-person shooter video games created and developed by Bend Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and its now-defunct subsidiary 989 Studios for the PlayStation console line.
Much of the series' exploits follow protagonist Gabriel Logan and his partner Lian Xing as the duo and their allies fight to stop the distribution and usage of the eponymous Syphon Filter, a powerful and mysterious biological weapon that drives much of the early games' storylines. Gameplay within the series primarily focuses on third-person shooting segments as well as stealth.
Syphon Filter was conceived when 989 Studios approached Bend Studio (then known as Eidetic) with a one-page pitch for a spy game; despite the studio's inexperience and development difficulties that caused the title to be nearly cancelled, the first game was released to critical acclaim and strong sales. Bend Studio released several games throughout the next decade, culminating the narrative with 2007's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow. Critical response to the series has been largely positive, with most games being critically well-received.
