Until Dawn is a 2015 adventure video game developed by Supermassive Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 4.
The story of Until Dawn has players assume the role of eight young adults who reunite on Blackwood Mountain one year after a tragic incident; during the reunion, the group finds themselves in danger from unknown threats, with the player's decisions determining the characters' fates. All playable characters can survive or die throughout the game. Player decisions are informed by a butterfly effect system.
Until Dawn underwent a lengthy development process, originally envisioned as a PlayStation Move-focused title for the PlayStation 3. Supermassive eventually shifted development to the PlayStation 4, which led to removal of the motion controls and usage of Guerrilla Games' Decima engine. The story was intended to evoke slasher films, and the development team took inspiration from various works of horror fiction and video games. It was officially announced at Gamescom 2012.
Despite lack of marketing push from Sony, Until Dawn received generally favorable reviews and exceeded sales expectations. Critics praised the visuals, performances, branching story choices and worldbuilding, though they found fault within the game's controls and predictability. The game was nominated for several end-year accolades, winning Best Original Property at the 13th British Academy Games Awards. Supermassive followed with a spin-off Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, and a prequel, The Inpatient. A remake, developed by Ballistic Moon, is slated to release in 2024. A film adaptation is in works.
